About In-xilios

A few years ago, a friend of mine, who is a poet, wrote “that going away was something very complicated”. Today, I believe this is true. When you go away and leave everything, all is left in such place is the spirit you created over the years.

Once you arrive at a new place, the most difficult task is to get use to the mirror, to the new mirror that reflects back a new image of yourself. Maybe NOT that image you use to have, full of memories and unrecoverable life lessons, but you see yourself as real as this new place. You think and rethink how to reinvent yourself as a human being and after that it comes the big question; and in the profession?

I have always been interested in photographers who have a strong attitude and passion towards photography more so than in his photographs. There are remarkable coincidences in many photographers trough history. Think about Atget and Kertez; the first exiled in his own city at the end of the XIX century, the other always exiled from his Hungarian origin. Both always traversed the mirror and the window concept to adapt the window in the mirror and the mirror in “his window”.

I have had the immense pleasure to have shared “criteria and certainties” on photography with a young Aaron Sosa in my years of exile-inxile in Caracas. Today we shared an inxile-exile that brings us closer together in both life and photography. Aaron’s photographs are either more mirrors than windows or more windows than mirrors that reflects vision and places, fragmenting and merging. The boy peeking through the curtains, is the first photograph of this work, he looks out the city’s skyline divided in two by the delicate bevel of the window, on one side the backlighting outline of the city and on the other side the vastness.

It’s true, Aaron’s exile-inxile is rather an emotional state than an objective and conscious vision, but there are photographers that got tired of objectivity a long time ago, and its politically correct implications. We visualize a nonexistent but warm and welcoming place that allow us to quietly keep going on doing what we do…..photographs
